Did you know, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, in 2015, poison centers have received reports of 12,594 unintended exposures to highly concentrated packets of laundry detergent by children 5 and younger? It is up to us as parents with children in our care to keep these items up and out of their reach on a shelf or locking them up when not in use.
The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI), representing producers of household cleaning products, launched the KEY Pledge consumer safety campaign back in June 2013 to stop these preventable accidents. As part of their efforts, ACI is providing consumers with the necessary education and awareness (and reminder!) around the proper usage, storage, and handling of liquid laundry packets.
We’re working with ACI to encourage you to put laundry safety on your radar screen, take action and Pledge to be the KEY to a safe laundry room and routine. Together, we can make a difference and bring that number of calls to poison control down!
Here’s how you can get involved:
Take the KEY Pledge online at keypledge.com and follow ACI’s simple steps to be the KEY to your family’s laundry safety. By taking ACI’s KEY Pledge to keep a safe laundry room/area and routine, you will automatically be entered into their sweepstakes to win a $2,500 gift card* for a laundry room makeover. This is real exciting to me since I do not have an actual laundry room.
The American Cleaning Institute has also created this activity sheet to help you teach children that laundry packets are not toys. What I love about this activity sheet is that you can go over it with your child so they know what they can and cannot play with. It also includes helpful laundry safety tips for parents! I think this activity sheet is such a great source to encourage children to learn more and it’s great for them to visually see what’s safe to play with. You can even share a copy of the activity sheet your child completes and send back to ACI to potentially be featured on their website!
