Four Tips to Help Your Child with SAT and ACT Prep

18

With the school year well underway, many high school students are beginning to think about taking the SAT or ACT to prepare for college applications. SAT and ACT exams are an important part of the college admissions process.  There is quite a bit of preparation that should go into taking the SAT and ACT exams, in order to have the best results. Parents are often anxious to help their students do their best with these important evaluations but are unsure where to begin. Here are a few tips that will help you to help your child with SAT and ACT Prep.

Encourage Your Child and Help Them Keep Perspective

Having the right attitude as students go into testing is important, as is their attitude throughout the studying process. Encourage your child to do their best and give them the support they need to get the job done. However, make sure that they understand that one poor score is not the end of the world. There is far more to applying to colleges and universities. Though the SAT and ACT may be important and doing their best will help increase the odds of acceptance to their desired school, it is only one piece of the higher education puzzle.

Educate Yourself About the Tests

The first step to helping your child with SAT and ACT prep is to understand exactly what the tests consist of for your student. Take some time to review sample tests, find out when and where testing is taking place in your area, and learn about what kind of tutoring and preparation options are available. There is a lot of information out there, so it’s important to take some time to research before making decisions that could affect your child’s college acceptance.

Help Your Child Decide What Exam is Right for Their Goals

Though many colleges will accept both the SAT and ACT scores, there are some that prefer scores from one test or the other. Look into the admission requirements of the schools that your child is considering to find out if they favor one test over the others. You can also use your research to determine if the style of a specific test will be a better fit for your student. While the tests have many similarities, there are unique features, as well. For example, the SAT offers more time for the reading section, while the ACT includes a science section. Your child’s strengths should play a role in deciding which test to take.

Help Your Child with SAT and ACT Prep

Once you have decided which test is the right one, the real work begins. One of the easiest ways to help your child with SAT and ACT prep is ensuring that your child is academically prepared. You can do this your own, but students often see more success when they work with a tutoring service that specializes in college preparation.

Our school always held like a six week course that would help the students before taking any of these tests. Most of the colleges and some universities around us now don’t require you to take these anymore, it is more about their placement tests.

I know things are different from Canada to the USA. We don’t have those tests here, but I do know that if someone wants to attend school in the US they do have to take SAT and ACT.
