3 Ways to Improve Your Writing

1

Writing is a nuanced art form that many people spend their entire lives trying to perfect. Even one of the most successful authors of all time, Stephen King, has spoken openly about doubting his writing skills. During a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, King admitted that he is still afraid he won’t be able to finish each story he starts writing.

The same goes for amateur writers and students, as well. Many people attempting to write essays or assignments for high school, college, or graduate school end up feeling overwhelmed by the task and critical of their writing. While sometimes these fears are unfounded and overly critical, there is always room for improvement.

If you feel like your writing isn’t at the level you would like it to be, there are a number of strategies you can employ to improve your writing skills. Here are three ways to improve your writing.

Read as much as you can

Find some time to read every day. While this may sound like a cliché piece of advice you probably heard countless times already, that doesn’t mean it is any less true. First and foremost, reading can improve your ability to focus. In today’s fast-paced culture of instant gratification, being able to truly focus on one task for a few hours, or even 15 minutes, is becoming a rare trait.

Additionally, reading will expand your vocabulary and knowledge base, providing you with more words and ideas to utilize in your own writing. On top of all that, reading can also relieve stress and take your mind off of your own writing. Sometimes all it takes to conquer a case of writer’s block is a clear and refreshed head.

Don’t be afraid to read outside of your comfort zone. If you only usually read novels, pick up some poetry or even a scientific journal. Reading different styles of writing across a variety of subjects may serve as that spark of inspiration you’ve been searching for.

Use a professional writing service

More and more writers and students are taking advantage of professional writing services. These services allow customers to order personalized essays, articles, and other writing pieces from qualified writing professionals. These custom pieces can then be used as an example for writers in need of help and a reference point to compare their work to. Many students feel overwhelmed by certain essay topics or assignments and can’t figure out how to begin writing. A sample piece on the same topic can serve as a great jumping off point for a struggling writer.

Some of the better writing services even give customers the ability to communicate with their assigned writer, opening the door for feedback and guidance between writer and customer. This can help you get an experienced opinion on the writing task in front of you. A quick online search for the best place to buy essays should point you in the right direction.

Outline, then outline some more

Many people make the mistake of diving headfirst into a writing project without performing any type of planning, preparation, or outlining. While there are certainly some people who thrive by writing in an unorganized manner, many others are shooting themselves in the foot with this strategy, especially when it comes to academic writing.

Outlining and pre-planning what you are going to write about, and in what order, can alleviate a great deal of the stress associated with writing. Once you have all of your ideas and sections laid out, you can focus solely on your writing.
