Dinner parties held at home can be great fun. The guest list can range from an enormous extended family gathering served buffet style to an intimate dinner with a single special someone. Part of the effect of the party is in the menu, of course, but another large part is the ambiance, particularly the way the space is decorated. For simple dinners with everyone around a single table, most of the decorations will go on that table.
Special table linens in appropriate colors can be purchased or made, and simple candles in carefully selected holders may be added for contrast. Low floral arrangements that make elegant centerpieces are available from local florists online, or the hostess herself may choose to arrange colorful ornaments in a special dish. Buffet tables can carry more elaborate decorations, since diners do not need to see over or around them to carry on a conversation.
Taller candles in more elaborate holders can accent larger decorations. The trick to buffet decorations is making sure nothing gets knocked over, so some thought should go into stability and placement. Balloons, knickknacks and banners can be used as decorations, as can dishes or vases holding paper or fabric flowers or, for an upscale look, real ones. Decorations, whether used on a dining table, a buffet or elsewhere, add tremendously to guests’ enjoyment of a dinner party. The hostess with a talent for decor is well on her way to a reputation as an accomplished entertainer.
