As a dog parent, you differ from the average dog owner. While there is no doubt that dog owners love their furry friends, dog parents strive to ensure that their pups feel comfortable, appreciated, and above all included, which means finding ways to include Fido in each annual festivity. Though Halloween is still a way away, it’s never too early to start thinking about your family’s theme. Whether you’re a family of two, a family of three, or a family of more, there’s a costume motif for you.
The Wizard of Oz
If your pup isn’t fond of wearing clothes, this is a theme of which he will be more than happy to be a part. The Courage the Cowardly Lion costume is nothing more than a fuzzy mask that frames your pup’s face. Slip the mane over his muzzle and voila! He’s good to go. All you need to do is don a Dorothy costume. If there are other members of the family you wish to include, consider having them dress up as the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Wicked Witch of the West, or the Great Oz himself.
Is your pooch small enough to be able to fit into the basket of a bike? Skip the costume altogether and go as Dorothy and Toto.
Little Red Riding Hood
This costume theme is incredibly easy to pull off if your canine already looks like a wolf. All you need to do is find a red cape and a picnic basket and you’re set to impress your friends with your real life Little Red Riding Hood motif. If your pup doesn’t look like a wolf, you can still get into character by purchasing a cozy wolf costume, which is one of the more popular Halloween dog costumes.
Hotdog Vendor
If you’re tired of cutesy plays off of movie characters, consider something a little more every day, such as a hotdog and hotdog vendor. There’s a hotdog-sized costume out there somewhere just perfect for your pooch. As for you, don a red apron and a retro diner food serve hat and you’re ready to hit the town.
Jurassic Park
Do you have some khakis lying around that haven’t seen the light since the 90s? Pull those bad boys out, find a shirt to match, and you’re pretty much a Jurassic Park ranger. As for Fido – get him a dinosaur costume. A stegosaurus costume will help make him look somewhat ferocious, but not too much so that he scares away the trick-or-treaters.
The Pope and His Clergy
Most Halloween costume themes that incorporate family pets feature the human as the main character, but not this one. The Holy Hound costume allows your dog to act like religious royalty for the day and will ensure that all eyes are on him when you take him strolling through the neighborhood. You have the freedom to dress up as any member of his clergy, including a nun, cardinal, or archbishop.
Breakfast
If breakfast is your favorite meal of the day, pay homage to it by dressing up like a waffle with a side of eggs. You can either let your pup take the spotlight by gracing him with the waffle costume or you yourself can be the main dish. Regardless of which you choose, your costumes are sure to sizzle.
Not a fan of waffles? Consider some other food theme, such as pizza and the pizza delivery pup, donut and coffee, hamburger and fries, bacon and eggs, or ketchup and mustard.
Whether you’re hoping to win a Halloween contest this year or you just want to make sure your pooch is able to join in on good, wholesome fun, give one of the above costume themes a try. The memories alone will be well worth the effort you put into making your theme come to life.
