3 Tips to Saving Money on Transportation in an Urban City

6

If you live in an urban environment you are likely used to taking public transportation to get to work or socialize after hours. While it is true that those who live in a city save money on not having a car payment or other expenses that come with owning a car, their transportation costs still can add up to be a costly amount per year. This article will identify some ways that you can save money on transportation in an urban city.

  1. Look for discounts. Discount apps and website such as https://rideshareapps.com/uber-promo-codes-for-existing-users/ offer great promotion codes for existing and new users on Uber and Lyft. It is easy and convenient to access these special discounts and often times you can do so from an app on your phone. You can also find discounts on sites to help you save money on other transportation expenses such as flights and rental cars. Companies are often offering discounts to get you to use their services and some even reward you with a discount when you return to use their services again. Before booking, check to see if the company is known for offering great deals.

  2. Avoid peak times. While you are going to save money by taking an Uber or a Lyft car instead of a taxi, you will still want to avoid taking a ride during peak times. Peak times include the rush hour or when there is heavy traffic. Avoiding peak time can save you a significant amount of money. For example, a ride that would take you $5 normally could cost you $7-$10. If you add that up over a period of time, you could be facing a substantial difference.

  3. Use a metro card. If you are not interested in using Lyft or Uber service, you should invest in a metro card. Many cities that have public transportation such as a bus system or underground train system will sell cards that offer great savings. For example, if you purchase an annual or monthly pass, you can save more money than if you were to purchase your metro card on a weekly basis.

These are just a few ideas as to how you can save money but there are much more. If you know someone at work who has a car, consider carpooling together. It is nice to offer to share the gas expense with them to cut down on their costs and make it a lucrative deal for them as well. Another idea is to plan out when you are going to need a ride. If you know that you will need a ride to work but also to the gym, consider signing up for a gym that is near the office or within walking distance of your home. That way you don’t have to pay for transportation to both places. With diligent planning, creative thinking, and being open to trying new things, you can certainly save a plethora of money on transportation in an urban city.

Great suggestions for saving money while traveling in the city. I like to use the ‘car-pool’ option on Uber. Usually they don’t pick up another driver but the fair stays low whether they do or don’t. Bonus! – Katy
