The 4 Tips To Help Your Pick The Perfect Perfume Every Time

4

A perfume is a way to enhance your personal style and add a bit of luxury to every occasion. The right perfume can boost your confidence and leave a memorable impression on the people you meet. When hunting for perfume, you have probably lost yourself in a store, surrounded by countless bottles, unsure of where to start.

How do you ensure that the fragrance we wear complements the occasion? Matching perfume to the occasion is a bit of an art so you have to have a plan. In this article, we will go over what it takes to pick the right perfume every time.

1 – Understand perfume notes

When you first spray a perfume, you’re greeted by an immediate scent. This is what is called the ‘top note’. It’s the first thing we smell. But it doesn’t stay around for too long, often fading away after just a few minutes. A good example is the crisp green notes of this lilac perfume by Aerin.

Once the top note says its brief hello and goodbye, we meet the ‘middle’ or ‘heart notes’. This is where the true personality of the perfume shines. These scents last longer, usually for a few hours, and they give the perfume its main character. If a perfume was a book, the heart notes would be its main story.

Finally, as the day goes on, we’re left with the ‘base notes’. These are the scents that stick around the longest, lingering on our skin even at the end of the day. Base notes are like the lasting memory of the perfume, giving us a gentle reminder of its presence long after we’ve put it on.

The reason it’s important to know all of this is because you can pick the right scent for your mood when you know how the perfume will change over time.

2 – Know the types of perfumes

The terms “Eau De Parfum” and “Eau De Toilette” on perfume bottles can create a lot of confusion. These terms tell us about the concentration of the perfume, which can give us clues about how long they’ll last and how strong they’ll smell.

Eau De Parfum is a type of perfume that has a higher concentration of fragrance. This means it’s stronger and can last longer on the skin. Many people find that Eau De Parfum can stay noticeable for around 4 to 6 hours, sometimes even longer.

On the other hand, Eau De Toilette has a lighter concentration. It’s a bit more subtle and usually doesn’t last as long as Eau De Parfum. You might get around 2 to 4 hours of noticeable scent with an Eau De Toilette.

3 – Personal factors

Not every perfume is going to smell the same on every person. There are individual factors that will make one perfume smell a certain way on one person and differently on another.

The biggest factor on what a perfume will smell like is skin type. Just like how our skin can be oily, dry, or somewhere in between, perfumes can react differently to each type. People with oily skin might notice that scents last longer and come off stronger. This is because the oils in the skin can hold onto the fragrance better. On the other hand, those with dry skin might find that perfumes fade faster.

What you eat can change your body’s natural smell. Strong foods like garlic, spices, and certain vegetables can alter the way a perfume smells on your skin.

4 – Match the mood and setting

Picking a perfume can be like picking an outfit. You want to match the mood and setting.

For daytime casual events, like a sunny afternoon or a brunch with friends, you’ll want something light and cheerful. Think of scents that are fresh and airy.

When you’re heading out for dinner, the setting is often more formal. This calls for deeper and more sensual fragrances. Musk is a popular choice, giving a rich and warm aroma.

Romantic dates are special. You want to feel close and connected. Scents that are intimate and alluring are the way to go. Vanilla has a sweet and comforting smell, while rose is timeless and romantic.

In a work setting, it’s essential to strike a balance. You don’t want something too overpowering. Subtle and sophisticated is the key. Light wood scents, like cedar, are both grounding and professional. Subtle florals, like lily or orchid, can also be suitable.
