Signs You Need a New Air Filter

0

Checking and changing the air filter is one of those simple home maintenance chores that can go overlooked because of our busy lives. The filter is tucked away under a grate and we rarely take note of it. Ideally, though, it is recommended that the HVAC filter in your home get replaced every three months. How frequently you change your air filter out, however, can depend on several things such as pets or the environment. These things might impact how often you change your filter.

Not only will the air quality in your home depend on a clean air filter, but so does the efficiency of your HVAC system. If your filter is clogged with dirt and dust, the ventilation in your home will be impacted and the temperature could be inconsistent and uncomfortable. Maintaining a regular replacement schedule will determine an air filter’s potential for increasing indoor comfort. Let’s take a look at some signs that you might need a new air filter.

Unit Temperature

One indicator that you need to change your filter is if you notice that the back of the unit is extremely hot. Once the filter becomes dirty and clogged you might also feel warm air coming from the back of the unit. A dirty filter will make the air conditioner work harder to maintain a cool house. This could have an impact on the equipment such as the condenser and cause your unit to wear down faster. On average a unit should last 10 to 15 years, but overworked equipment could mean more repairs and could shorten the life of the unit. Taking the simple step to change the filter could ensure that your HVAC system remains healthy.

Inconsistent Temperatures

While there can be many causes for HVAC inefficiency, the first place to start is with the air filter. If the furnace or air conditioner isn’t working like it normally does or is creating inconsistent air temperatures, a dirty filter could be the culprit. A dirty air filter will restrict proper airflow that could impact the temperature in your home no matter what the thermostat is set to. Inconsistent temperature control is one of the sure signs that you need a new filter.

Increased Energy Costs

If you notice an increase in your energy bills, an inefficient HVAC unit could be the culprit. Depending on where you live, you might expect some variation with energy costs based on the season. However, if you find that your bill is higher than usual, a dirty air filter could be driving up the cost. Each unit is designed to meet certain Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating guidelines. If your HVAC unit is working harder to maintain air temperature because of a dirty filter, however, it will use more energy and the consequences will show up in your monthly bill.

Poor Indoor Air Quality

If you or anyone in your family is an allergy or asthma sufferer, you should make it a priority to change your air filters regularly. Allergens such as dust, pollen, and pet dander will stick to your air filter and permeate the air circulating your home. If the filter becomes full of contaminants and pollutants, this could lead to an indoor air quality problem that could prove to be unhealthy for those living in the home. If you notice an increase in allergy attacks, you might need to change the air filter.

Dusty Air Vents

Finding dust buildup on or around your air vents is a common sign of a dirty air filter. As your filter becomes saturated with contaminants and dust these get blown through the air vents and into your home. If there is a significant amount of dust on the grates of your air vents or the surrounding surfaces, your air filter probably needs to be changed.

One of the most basic parts of your HVAC unit is the air filter, however, it is an integral component of the system’s efficiency. Paying attention to the filter and creating a regular schedule for replacing it will lead to a cleaner home and a well-functioning air system.
