Some kids enjoy being indoors more than others for a variety of reasons. Instead of rack our brains all day long wondering why, have a little bit of faith that they’ll grow out of it eventually and we can thank our lucky stars in the meanwhile that we get to spend more time with them this way. I guess it’s a double-edged sword we’re battling. But at the same time, more and more indoors-y children are kicking our good old-fashioned habits away too. Whatever happened to spending a calm evening reading a classic book or spending some quality family time playing trivia? And how do you make the best of it?

The evolving digital age just makes it look like there’s far too much effort involved in keeping up with laden (albeit fun) activities; most teens like to substitute that time with computer time. But if my kids are going to spend time behind a computer or tablet then I’d rather know what they’re up to especially if it’s some down-time gaming they’re after. I keep seeing more and more banners pop up advertising all sorts of role-play games, and figured I’d much rather have them go to a dedicated site they wouldn’t end up on because of a spammy advertisement.

So I did some browsing. Common programs like Steam are bound to pop up in your search results, but if it’s free play time you’re looking for, one family friendly gem that might have missed your radar is Poki.

Flash games have been around for quite a while. I can’t say that I’m introducing a completely foreign concept to you, but how flash games have evolved over the years is what counts in this case.

game categories 1You’ll find typical old-timers and classics like Mario games versus up and coming games inspired by some Disney, DC and Marvel’s most popular comic book and movie characters,
math games for all those Mathletes to be and even fashion-conscious dress up games or cooking games that might inspire your kid to become a fashionista or chef in the future. You name it and you’ll probably find it!

Once you’re on the site, it’s easy to pick out the popular games from the lesser knowns by viewing the percentage of people who have given each game a thumb’s up, and Poki has a habit of tracking which games have attracted you in the past to make similar recommendations for future gaming sessions.

Hint: this is a neat tip to keep in mind since you can get a good impression of what your children are playing this way.

There’s not much that can go wrong on a site like Poki so I wouldn’t worry about being there the whole time, but if you do decide to stick around, there’s ample opportunity to get on your kid’s good side! Why not join in on the fun? Let us know which games were your favorite if you do.
