5 Natural Hair Removal Tactics for Smooth Skin
Back in the day when we were foraging for berries as sustenance, your body hair may have come in far handier than it does today. Yes, your body hair is there for a reason- namely, warmth and hygiene.
But with the advent of shelter, clothing and general beauty standards, body hair is not quite so in-demand.
Whether you’re looking for a natural hair remover for facial hair, arm hair, leg hair or intimate areas, here are 5 natural remedies that work.
- Homemade Sugar Wax
Sugar wax has been around for decades, but it’s only recently grown in popularity as a remedy for natural hair removal.
Sugar wax is exactly what the name suggests and can be whipped up in the comfort of your own kitchen with sugar, lemon juice, and water.
That’s 200g of sugar, 60ml of lemon juice, and 60ml of water, to be exact.
To make this concoction, bring all the ingredients to a boil in a saucepan. Once its reached boiling point, turn down the heat to a low-medium temperature, stirring regularly.
Once the mixture has turned a golden brown hue, remove from the stovetop. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and allow to cool for 30-minutes. Once cool, spoon some of the mixtures into your hands and roll into a ball.
Clean and dry the area you intend to wax, then spread the wax ball out over your skin. Let it sit for a minute, then gently lift a corner and get a good grip on the wax.
Remember to pull the wax in the opposite direction of your hair growth. Count down to 3, take a breath and pull the wax off quickly from your skin.
After the waxing is complete, soothe the area with warm water, remove residue then moisturize.
- Pumice Stone Hair Removal
Pumice stone- that thing you use to scrub your feet? Yes, pumice stone can be used as a natural hair removing tool.
The rough texture of the stone works to catch your hair and gently remove it from the skin. Basically, the pores of your skin will try to cling onto your hair, while the tension from the pumice stone pulls them out.
Make sure the pumice stone is dry and clean, and use it in small, circular motions across each area. The texture of the stone also provides a natural exfoliant to the skin.
Remember to moisturize well after hair removal. This method is ideal for removing arm hair and leg hair – avoid intimate areas though!
- Homemade Egg Paste
The thought of slathering egg all over your body to remove hair doesn’t sound very appealing, does it? But this egg paste is mixed with other ingredients to create a natural hair remover, ideal for banishing facial hair.
Egg is a natural adhesive and tends to create a film-like substance on the surface it sets on. It’s this substance which helps with natural hair removal.
To make the paste you’ll need one egg white, one tablespoon of sugar, and half a tablespoon of cornflour.
Mix the ingredients together, then apply a thin layer of the paste to a clean, dry area of skin. Leave it to set for 15-20 minutes, while it forms a film.
Slowly peel the film off, working from outside edges, in. The mask is great for extracting fine facial hair as well as impurities such as blackheads. It’s a win-win!
- Homemade Turmeric Paste
Although turmeric is often used in Indian cooking and a number of other fragrant cuisines, it is also widely used as a natural remedy for other things.
Turmeric has many beneficial qualities for both the interior and exterior of the body, including being used as a natural hair remover.
To make the turmeric paste, mix three teaspoons of turmeric powder with one tablespoon of milk. Then spread the paste over dry, clean skin in the same direction as your hair growth.
Leave the paste to dry for 20-minutes, then apply a small amount of water to the skin and begin to scrub using small, circular motions.
Rinse off the remaining residue with warm water and pat your skin dry. As with papaya paste, turmeric paste must be used regularly in order to see real results.
This natural paste is ideal for the arm and facial hair removal.
- Homemade Papaya Paste
Papaya paste is great as a long-term solution to removing your hair and keeping it off.
Although the paste will not simply work its magic overnight, enzymes in the papaya fruit work to breakdown hair follicles, preventing hair from regrowing.
For the paste, you’ll need two tablespoons of raw, mashed up papaya flesh and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder.
Mix the papaya flesh together with the turmeric paste to create a soft, smooth papaya paste. Add a little water if needs be.
Rub over the skin liberally, massaging the paste into the skin so that it reaches deep into the hair follicles. Leave the paste to sit for 15 minutes, then wash off with water.
Repeat this process at least three times a week in the beginning in order to see results that last. Use papaya paste on the arms, legs, and underarm area.
