8 Tips on Hosting Dinner Parties at Your Home

5

Did you know that spending time with good friends lowers stress levels, improves your mood, and boosts cardiovascular health? These are three good reasons why dinner parties are always a good idea.

If you’re long overdue for a good dinner party or simply want to do things a little different this weekend, then you’ve come to the right place.

Hosting a dinner party is a lot of fun for you and your friends, but there are a couple of crucial tips that you need to make sure the night goes off without a hitch. Keep reading and start planning!

1. Keep the Dinner Party Invitations Personal

Hosting a massive dinner party where you invite the whole neighborhood will become extremely stressful. A dinner party works best as an intimate affair. You’ll be able to host without a hiccup and the evening will turn out wonderful when the company is great.

Consider who you want to invite and whether the group will get along. As everyone will be seated around the same table sharing the delicious meal that you whip up, you want to ensure that you haven’t got a clash of personalities.

Once you’ve come up with the perfect, exclusive, and intimate guest list, you can send out invitations.

2. Explore Different Recipes for Dinner

Once you’ve sent out the invitations, you’ll have a basic idea of how many people will be attending and you can start to think of the menu. This is one of the most important aspects of hosting a dinner party.

You want to find a recipe that doesn’t keep you slaving in the kitchen the whole night but is still delicious and impressive. Look for recipes that you can prepare beforehand, such as cold starters or desserts that need to be in the fridge overnight.

For the main meal, something that you can pop in the oven is a winner. Or consider a super quick yet gourmet meal. For example, you can try this recipe.

3. Think of a Theme

Dinner with friends is always more fun when you include an exciting theme. There are so many cool dinner themes to choose from. You could host a Mexican night with margaritas and tacos, an ode to the French cuisine with champagne and caviar, or a seafood extravaganza.

Get creative with the theme, and choose one that you can match the menu, drinks, and decorations with.

You may even choose to include a dress-up component. Sombreros, anyone?

4. Brainstorm Party Decoration Ideas

Depending on your dinner party budget, you may choose to go low-key with the decorations or over-the-top and all out! The fantastic thing is that it’s easy to jazz up your dining room regardless of the budget.

Of course, if you have a theme in mind, then your decorations are easier to think up. If you don’t have a theme, then brainstorm some ideas.

If you want to create a classy and elegant atmosphere, then keep the decorations simple yet striking. If you’re looking for something a little more playful, then go all out!

As a rule, a beautiful table cloth and table decorations such as flowers and candles are an absolute must.

5. Create a Music Playlist

Lovely background music is essential for creating a relaxing and enjoyable ambiance. Spend some time compiling a party playlist with all your favorite tunes.

You can even make a bespoke playlist that matches the theme of your dinner party. For example, consider playing some slow Italian melodies as your guests twirl their spaghetti.

Ensure that the music you choose matches the energy that you expect and desire from the party. For example, perhaps after dinner, you’ll want to play some games or lift the mood—plan some music to get everyone feeling cheerful and groovy.

6. Create a Refreshment Table

Creating a DIY-bar will take a lot of pressure off of you as a host. You won’t need to walk around constantly taking drink orders and filling up people’s glasses.

You can set up the table with some party staples, such as wine, or your themed cocktails and drink of choice.

Some of your guests may have specific refreshment preferences, so this allows everyone to have exactly what they want.

You may also choose to add some appetizers to the table if guests are arriving a couple of hours before dinner.

7. Be a Good Host

When you invite people into your home, it’s up to you to help them to feel comfortable. Perhaps the dinner party is with good friends who know you well, in which case hosting will be easy. But for people who rarely come over to your house, you need to remember to look after them.

They may feel nervous about helping themselves to refreshments, for example. Make an effort to make guests feel welcome and encourage them to feel at home

8. Go Easy on Yourself and Enjoy

Remember, you’re hosting this dinner party to spend quality time with your friends and have an enjoyable and memorable evening. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect. Don’t let yourself become so stressed that you forget what the essence of the dinner was supposed to be.

Have a good time and relax, and if things don’t go as planned (which is likely), take the opportunity to laugh it off.
