Choose a topic

At first you may not have the opportunity to choose your topic, but as you progress in the grade level, you’ll have this opportunity, but we’re not sure it’s as easy as it seems to be. First of all, you need to make sure that the topic is good for the kind of paper you need to write. If you need to write a general overview, then a general topic will do it. But if you need to be specific, you have to choose a certain topic.

The purpose of the essay

You come to know the purpose of the essay when you know the type of paper you’re writing. There are three main basic types of essay papers. Analytical, which evaluates a certain issue by presenting analysis of the components to the reader; expository, which is also known as explanatory, and it provides (obviously) explanations of certain things; argumentative, which is also known as persuasive, and it talks about a specific topic, and it comes with arguments to support the topic.

After you know what kind of essay you have to write, you have to think about the topic. It’s advisable not to go with the first one you find and like. It’s good to take some time to think about it, and see if it fits you. You might want to get a piece of paper and simply write down ideas until you find the right one. Leave out those topics that you don’t find interesting, or that are too challenging for you.

The introduction

The introduction represents the first paragraph of the essay. It’s where you introduce the reader to your essay. It’s supposed to catch the attention of the reader and its full attention. Make the first sentence of the paragraph as interesting as you can. Those after the first one should simply clarify the opening statement. Then, at the end of it, you should write your thesis statement.

The body

The body is basically where you explain the topic you’ve chosen, by coming with great arguments. Every idea that comes from the outline (or diagram) is going to represent a part of the body. If you have five ideas, you’ll get five paragraphs. Every paragraph should support the thesis statement. The first paragraph, however, should be the strongest one. You should start it by supporting the idea. Then, come up with another sentence that will have facts and lots of examples. The idea from the end of the paragraph should be like a conclusion of what you’ve discussed in the paragraph.

The conclusion

This is the final paragraph of your essay. It should come with a restating of your thesis statement, but illustrated it with different words than those used in the introduction. This paragraph should be a summary of what you’ve written in the whole essay. Also, you should leave the impression that the essay has come to an end. Try to be confident.
