Tips for Camping with Kids and/or Pets

1

Camping can be a wonderful family adventure that allows for special bonding time and lifelong memories. Many families choose to go camping in the summer, but camping facilities may be open year round, and planning a trip during off-peak times, such as spring or fall, may mean fewer crowds and more availability. If you opt for a renting a permanent structure, such as beavers bend broken bow cabins, rather than roughing it in a tent, you don’t need to be as concerned about inclement weather spoiling your trip.

Regardless of the time of year you choose to travel, there are extra steps you need to take when camping with children and/or pets to keep them safe and entertained. Interestingly, whether you’re traveling with kids or pets or both, the tips are similar.

1. Plan Ahead

Campgrounds tend to fill up quickly, especially in the summer months, so be sure to make your reservations well ahead of time to ensure that you can secure a spot that is kid- and/or pet-friendly. Learn about the rules of the camping area beforehand in regard to things like fire regulations, quiet periods, and leash laws. Educate your children about the rules as well.

2. Safety First

The wilderness can be beautiful, but it can also be hazardous for kids and pets. Even if the campground doesn’t require you to keep your dog on a leash at all times, it’s still a good idea to do so in order to keep your furry friend from wandering off or getting into a misunderstanding with local wildlife. Kids should be equipped with a flashlight and a whistle in case they get lost and instructed on how to use them. Carry a first aid kit with you at all times in case of emergencies.

3. Pack a Few Favorite Toys

Both kids and pets can get bored or homesick on a camping trip. Bringing along a few favorite toys from home can be a comfort in an unfamiliar situation in addition to their entertainment value.

Camping with kids and pets can forge memories that will last a lifetime. A little pre-planning and organization can help ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons.
