Better Safe Than Sorry: 10 Toxic Products You Need to Stop Using

3

You’ve been feeling sick lately and it’s not only you. Your entire household has been under the weather. You’re not sure what’s causing the illness but it’s got to stop.

Look around at the common objects that you use every single day. Pick up a bottle of cleaner and read the ingredients on the back. If you Google the ingredients you’ll be surprised to see how hazardous they are.

Cleaners aren’t the only toxic products you have laying around. Even the plastic containers you store food in can be dangerous.

To help you get your family feeling better and protect them, here is a complete list of products you should be tossing in the garbage.

  1. Perfume

Everyone wants to smell good for a date or when they go out in general. So, you reach for the perfume or cologne. Before you spray it on yourself, flip over that bottle and read the ingredients.

You’ll see camphor, benzaldehyde, benzyl acetate, acetone, ethyl acetate, linalool, and methylene chloride. When you breathe in a face full of these chemicals you may experience nausea, dizziness, irritation in your throat, skin, eyes, and lungs, headaches, and even kidney damage.

  1. Plastic Cutting Boards

The problem with plastic cutting boards is less that they are toxic and more that they aren’t sturdy. When you chop things on them the knife will leave little divots behind.

The bacteria from meats and other things you chop on the board will get trapped in these divots and contaminate your food. So instead of buying that cheap plastic cutting board, spring for bamboo or glass.

  1. Plastic Food Containers

If you’re like most people you have a million containers laying around to store your leftover food. Once you’ve eaten the food out of the container then you’ll put it in the dishwasher where it will become faded and foggy.

The reason why this happens is that plastic breaks down after a while. As it breaks down it releases harmful chemicals that will leak into any food items you store in them.

  1. Cleaning Products

As we told you in the beginning, household cleaning products have a lot of harmful chemicals in them. What you may not know is that you don’t have to use them. There are plenty of alternatives that you can pick up instead.

Some of these natural products you can use are baking soda, lemon with hot water, and soap powder. They all work as well as the toxic cleaners you’re using.

  1. Roundup

Weeds are taking over your yard so you’ve purchased roundup to take care of it. It will get rid of them but there is a chemical in it called glyphosate that has the potential to cause cancer.

It’s for this reason that it’s banned in certain countries. This article can tell you a little more about this harmful chemical and why you should be staying away from Roundup.

  1. Non-Stick Pans

Non-stick pans contain a cancer-causing chemical known as perfluorooctanoic acid. As you cook, the non-stick lining will chip off and contaminate your food with this chemical.

Instead of using these pans, pick up stainless steel or iron cookware and spray them with a natural non-stick spray.

  1. Air Fresheners

Air fresheners will make your home smell great but unless the room you use them in is well ventilated, they can do more harm than good. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to let your house smell.

Crack open a few windows before you spray the freshener or switch to more natural alternatives. You can plant an herb garden or create your own natural diffuser to knock out nasty smells.

  1. Aluminum Foil

Aluminum foil is everyone’s go-to for covering food before putting it in the oven or lining a baking sheet. The problem with using it is that it can bleed into your food. Aluminum has been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer’s so it’s better to stay away from it.

Instead, you can wrap up your food in parchment paper and cook with glass pans or a crockpot.

  1. Plastic Water Bottles

We’ve already talked a little about the dangers of plastic. This doesn’t end at water bottles. For one, when you toss them out, they don’t break down so they’re bad for the environment.

For two, it does leak chemicals into your water. It’s better to buy a filter and use a glass to drink out of instead.

  1. Antiperspirants

A lot of antiperspirants contain aluminum which you absorb into your sweat glands whenever you apply it. Again, aluminum exposure has been linked with diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

There are plenty of natural antiperspirants out there that are free from aluminum and any other chemicals that would be harmful to you. The problem is that these natural deodorants don’t always work that great. So, If you can’t find these alternatives or they’re not working like you want them to, you can always make your own natural deodorant at home.

Toxic Products You Should Toss in the Garbage

Are you using one of the toxic products on this list? If so then you should toss them out and switch to some of the alternatives we mentioned as soon as you can. If you don’t, they can pose a serious danger to your wellbeing.

Keep the dangerous toxins out of your home so your family can remain happy and healthy.
