When you own a house, it can feel like the jobs are never-ending and there is always something that needs doing. When you have children, the house can get particularly messy, with toys everywhere, smudges on the walls and dirt trailed across the floor. While this might be the case, and a messy house can indicate a fun house, it’s important that everyone pitches in to get it cleaned up at the end of a day. In this article we take a look at how you can encourage your kids to help around the house and take a bit of a load off your back. Keep on reading to find out more and get inspired.

Find a way to make the jobs fun

The first thing you should do when it comes to encouraging your kids to help around the house is to find a way to make them fun. You could turn them into a game, for example having a race against siblings to see who puts the most toys away in one minute, or putting on loud music and having them dance around as they do it. This can stop it being a negative association and make them more likely to enjoy helping out as opposed to dreading it.

Have a reward for the chores they do

There is nothing quite like an incentive to get your children to pitch in. You could have a list of chores and each one has a different reward attached to it. This could be anything from a small financial reward, to taking them out for an ice cream depending on what it is. This way your little ones are excited to do the jobs and you get the things around the house done at the same time. It’s a win win situation all round.

Include all family members in the chores

From a young child up to a teenager, there is no reason why anyone should be missing out on doing the chores around the house. Get everyone involved in the jobs, assigning specific tasks to different people depending on their age and capabilities. With everyone seeing everyone else helping out they won’t feel like it’s unfair and will be more likely to want to help and assist their relatives with the jobs that need doing. It’s a great way to bond too!

These are just a few simple yet effective ways you can encourage your kids to help around the house. No matter their age, they can help out with little things that can stop you from needing to do them and also teach them responsibility and to care for their things and those around them. What are some top tips you have for encouraging your kids to help around the house? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

I agree. Getting the kids to help out can be quite challenging but just like you mentioned here, I find the reward system to be very effective as an incentive. I use it oftentimes with my young ones and it works all the time
