The kitchen is a fun place to spend your time. However, kitchen safety should always be a priority. The kitchen is full of tools and environmental hazards that can be dangerous if you are not careful. Electric appliances, sharp knives, or open fires are all things that can cause serious accidents. Always observe the basic rules of kitchen safety. Adopt a cleanliness plan, and have safety gear at your disposal. You should also know who is in the space so that you can plan your movement. Here are four safety tips to use in the kitchen.

  1. Wear Shoes. Imagine a knife dropping on the floor with the sharp end facing down. Now imagine that going into your barefoot. Oil may also slip on the kitchen floor, making it slippery and easy to fall. Shoes will also protect you from stepping on broken glasses or other mishaps. Experts recommend that you always look for shoes that provide a comfortable non slip grip to protect you from such kitchen dangers.
  2. Extinguishing a Fire. In the United States alone, there are over 100,000 incidences of residential cooking fires each year. Kitchen fires are the primary cause of fires in most homes. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. If you do not know how to use it, learn. Fires only take a few seconds to become uncontrollable. Understand the different types of fires, such as electric and grease. Never use water to control fires. Use a pan cover or baking soda. The best way to put out a fire is by removing the air. Use an extinguisher to put out a fire in your oven.
  3. Cutting boards. Most people would prefer to avoid washing extra dishes. However, do not take shortcuts when it comes to chopping boards. Use different cutting boards for raw meat, fruits, and vegetables. Using the same board is a perfect way to get your entire family sick with salmonella poisoning. Experts recommend that you purchase two chopping boards: one for raw meat, seafood and poultry, and the other for fruits and vegetables. If you must use the same board, make sure you start by preparing your fruits and vegetables. Then use hot water and soap to clean it before preparing your meats.
  4. Wash your Hands. Washing your hands seems like an obvious thing to know. However, people forget. Use hot water and soap to clean your hands before and after cooking. Then use paper towels to dry your now clean hands. Using a dishtowel may cause food poisoning if it touches any raw meat or juices. Additionally, clean any surfaces and sinks that raw meat or juices may have touched.

The best way to stay safe is by understanding all the dangers that are present in your kitchen. You can also read about kitchen hazards to learn how you can best protect your family. Learn and teach everyone so that you can have peace of mind when you are away.
