What to Instill in Your Children to Help Them in Their Future Careers

We’ve all heard of those parents who start prepping their kids for ivy league schools from birth. But whether that describes you or not, there are things you can do to help your child excel in college and beyond. And it doesn’t have to involve mandarin lessons at age three (unless you want it to).

In this post, we’re going to cover some basic skills and lessons you can instill in your children to help them in their future careers. 

Healthy habits 

Healthy habits can help your child enjoy optimal cognitive function and overall health, which will contribute to their employability and career advancement later in life. 

Diet plays a key role in cognitive function, and it can mean the difference between your child excelling at school or being repelled by it. 

So if you want your child to perform well later in life, focus on instilling good habits like eating right, exercising and staying away from vices. It’s always wise to teach your kids about substance abuse before their friends do. Alcohol and tobacco education for kids can probably start younger than you think. 

Empathy and emotional intelligence 

As parents, empathy is one of the most important things we can teach our children. And it’s important to understand that empathy is different than sympathy. Empathy is the ability to connect with and feel the emotions that someone else is feeling. Sympathy is the ability to feel sorry for someone. 

There are programs and books available that can help you teach your child empathy, and volunteering can also help. On the plus side, there are many career benefits of volunteering, which is why it always looks good on a resume. Not only will this help your child when their looking for their first job, they’ll learn valuable teamworking skills not really found in sports or in school.

Leadership

We tend to spend a lot of our time teaching our children to follow rules. Because rules are often what keep our children safe. And although there are times we feel more like dictators than true leaders, we can still show leadership in parenting that will (hopefully) rub off on the child. True leadership is about encouragement and guidance 

Teamwork

As an adult, your child will need to be able to work with teammates to achieve a common goal. Teamwork is one of those soft skills that virtually every employer looks for in a job candidate. So, teaching your child how to function well on a team will help him or her excel in their careers later in life. 

Fortunately, it’s easy to teach your child how to be a good team player. If you have multiple children, you can task them to work together on chores and projects. And, to be quite honest, a lot of this comes naturally in parenting. 

If you don’t have multiple kids or if you just want to up the ante, encourage your children to play team sports. This way, they can learn how to make new friends and get along with various types of personalities. Team sports and other activities are a great way to encourage your child to learn the skills future employers will be looking for. 

Accountability

No one loves your kids more than you do, but that doesn’t mean you should always go easy on them. If you want your child to become a well-adjusted (and employable) adult, it’s important to hold your children accountable for their actions. This means that they claim their failures, wrongdoings and successes. And when they happen to break the rules, there must be fair and consistent consequences. 

It’s never too early to teach your child the soft skills they’ll need to become well-functioning and highly employable adults later in life. Because if they have to learn these things later, it’ll be much more difficult for them to succeed.
