How to Teach Your Children About Proper Dental Hygiene

0

Did you know that a third of kids in the United States don’t brush their teeth often or long enough?

Teaching kids to brush teeth can be a patience-testing task but it is crucial for their health and development.

If you want to make teaching your kids about brushing their teeth more engaging, there are many methods to try.

Continue reading to discover the best ways to teach your child about dental hygiene so that they can love their smile!

Set an Example

One of the best ways to teach your children about dental hygiene is to set an example.

Leading by example will help introduce the process of brushing teeth to your child. This is also an opportunity for them to imitate what you are doing so that they can effectively clean their mouth. It can be a fun routine to have with your child, brushing your teeth together at the end of the night.

The more that your children see you brushing your teeth and flossing regulalry, the more likely they are to do the same. It can also be helpful to have older siblings help lead by example too. If you need a couple of minutes to clean dinner, you can have an older child brush their teeth with your younger one.

Give Them Options

When your kids feel like they have a say in something, they are more likely to try it.

Giving your child options with their toothbrushes and toothpaste can help make them want to brush more often. Take time to look at all of the toothbrush options and explain the differences of each to your child. This will help them understand the options that they have and how to prevent any issues.

The flavor of toothpaste, mouthwash, and floss can sometimes be overwhelming to children. Many dental products come in fruity flavors that your child might enjoy. Use the shopping opportunities to teach them more about oral hygiene and create strong brushing habits.

Play Games

Did you know that there are games that you can play while brushing teeth and learning about the process?

Many parents recommend getting dolls or stuffed animals. Playing with these toys can stimulate your child and make them more engaged. Have the “stuffed animals” talk your child through brushing their teeth.

You can have your child practice brushing teeth with corn on the cob covered in spices or paint. Another fun game to play with your child at a young age is to pretend that the toothbrush is a train or spaceship. Much like when serving infants foods, you can make the delivery process fun and playful.

Don’t be afraid to get creative and develop your games with your child.

Let Them Meet the Dentist

If you are looking for dental care for kids, a Pediatric Dentist is highly recommended.

Pediatric dentists specialize in oral hygiene for children. This is beneficial because they have a better understanding of development from birth to 18. Letting your child meet the dentist before going to the first appointment can help build a bond and ensure excellent hygiene.

Your child should get the chance to talk about oral care with their dentist so that they can feel more comfortable in the office. Pediatric dentists are great at explaining treatments to children and making them feel prepared.

Teach Them How to Floss

Flossing can be a difficult task for children to learn how to do correctly and without hurting themselves.

You should start practicing flossing with your child at a young age. The best way is to get blocks, play-teeth, or other toys and have your child slide a string between each one. This will give them a large visual of the concept and they can practice the motions.

As your child begins to learn to floss, you can slowly introduce them to it by doing it for them, doing it with them, and then letting them try themselves. Be prepared for your child to bleed a little during this learning process, as their gums might be sensitive.

Read Books

The next time you go online or head to the bookstore, consider looking in the kid’s section.

The kid’s section of the store should have a variety of books about oral hygiene and dental visits. Since you will spend a lot of time reading to your child, it can be helpful to find dental books with their favorite characters in them.

Depending on the book you purchase, you can find one that talks about the consequences of not brushing their teeth or how to brush them and have fun. These books should be directed towards a child so that they are playful and engaging.

Play a Song

With a simple search online, you can find several children’s songs that talk about dental routines.

Some songs last the exact time that it takes to brush teeth. Others help teach about the habits kids should form with their dental health and why they should visit the dentist. Playing these songs while your child is brushing their teeth helps teach them more and makes the process more stimulating.

Certain children learn better when they hear songs. They can sing along with the speaker or you can join in on the fun!

Teach Your Little One About Dental Hygiene

Teaching your child about dental hygiene is a crucial part of development that must not be overlooked.

Getting your child in the habit of brushing their teeth and making dental health a fun learning experience help in the long term. Your child is more likely to brush their teeth effectively after watching you lead by example.

Don’t overlook the impact that a simple routine can have on your child’s health. A small routine could improve your child’s oral hygiene habits for life.
