Justin Bieber is still one of the most popular singers in the world. His career started more than a decade ago, and is still going strong. But with his immense popularity comes a lot of scrutiny about his personal life decisions. 

The Beginning

Bieber’s career took off in 2009 when record executive Scooter Braun discovered him on YouTube. This was back in the early days when YouTubers didn’t consider an experienced sex crime attorney as an asset. Since Bieber was discovered at such an early age, he managed to escape the normal legal troubles of older celebrities. At only 13 years old, his career would take off in the music industry with the debut album ‘My World’.

A Little in The Middle

As a young teenager, Bieber’s personal life was somewhat off-limits. Once he reached the age of 16, the world of celebrity started to take over. Attacks on his character became frequent, but never evolved beyond the usual hit pieces in magazines or blogs. At this point, Bieber had enough money that he could hire a marketing team to offset the misinformation. 

From there, it grew to copyright infringement lawsuits that used his name for recognition. This is notable since it technically had nothing to do with Bieber, and everything to do with his production team. Name recognition in the press is the only reason Bieber’s name was resolved. A 2013 $10 million dollar copyright infringement lawsuit (including Bieber & Usher’s name) was thrown out. Devin Copeland was not countersued, but managed to get a bump in popularity by filing the claim. 

The Real Ending

Once Bieber reached the age of 18, the frivolous lawsuits and misinformation articles exploded like a leaky faucet. Everyone wanted a piece of the pie, and attaching Bieber’s name to it was a win-win situation. It was this mentality that led to two users accusing him of sexual assault on a social media platform. 

Usually, a celebrity will let their publicist and lawyers handle false allegations. But since the allegations were so severe, Bieber immediately took things into his own hands. He responded to both, and provided solid proof that their claims were false. The move was so unexpected that it shocked both the accusers and the world. It was a brilliant play that stopped the circulation of false rumors before they had a chance to trend.

For most people, that would have been the end of the story. Unfortunately, Bieber is a mega celebrity that will always be a target. So, filing a $20 million dollar defamation lawsuit is the final step to prevent this from ever happening again. It is unprecedented, but the evidence is so strong that the judge has allowed it to move forward against the two Jane Doe’s. 

If Bieber wins the lawsuit, it will completely change how social media deals with false allegations on their platform.
