Trips to Italy are incomplete without visiting Rome, the capital city that has been known as the Eternal City for over 2000 years. It’s a city that is rich in history, culture, and art, with numerous attractions that are worth exploring. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Roman Forum are just a few of the city’s historical treasures that make Rome a must-visit destination.

The Colosseum: A Symbol of Roman Power and Brutality

The Colosseum is undoubtedly one of the most famous attractions in Rome, if not the world. This massive amphitheater was built in 80 AD and could seat up to 50,000 spectators. It was used for gladiator games, public spectacles, and other events that showcased the power and might of Rome.

Today, the Colosseum is a popular tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into ancient Rome’s brutal past. You can walk around the arena and imagine the cheers and roars of the spectators as the gladiators battled it out. You can also explore the underground tunnels and chambers where animals and gladiators were kept before the games.

The Roman Forum: The Political and Social Heart of Ancient Rome

The Roman Forum was the political and social center of ancient Rome, and it’s another must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the city’s history. The forum was where the Romans gathered to discuss politics, trade, and other matters of importance.

Today, the Roman Forum is a sprawling ruin that offers visitors a glimpse into ancient Roman life. You can walk through the forum and see the ruins of temples, basilicas, and other structures that were once the center of Roman life. You can also see the remains of the Curia, where the Roman Senate met, and the Rostra, where politicians addressed the public.

The Pantheon: A Marvel of Ancient Engineering and Architecture

The Pantheon is a marvel of ancient engineering and architecture that has stood the test of time. This massive temple was built in 125 AD and is known for its impressive dome, which was the largest in the world until the 15th century.

Today, the Pantheon is a popular tourist attraction that offers visitors a glimpse into ancient Rome’s architectural and engineering prowess. You can walk through the temple and marvel at the intricate details of the columns, arches, and other structures. You can also gaze up at the dome and wonder how the ancient Romans managed to build such a massive structure without modern technology.

The Vatican: A Religious and Cultural Treasure Trove

The Vatican is an independent city-state that is home to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. It’s also a cultural and historical treasure trove that is worth exploring. The Vatican Museums are home to some of the world’s most famous works of art, including the Sistine Chapel, which is adorned with Michelangelo’s famous frescoes.

If you’re interested in history, you can also visit the Vatican’s many museums, including the Vatican Library, which is home to some of the world’s oldest and most valuable books and manuscripts. And, of course, no visit to the Vatican would be complete without a trip to St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest and most impressive churches in the world.

Organize documents, credit cards and cash in different places: pockets, linings, wallets and key holders to avoid theft and trouble. It is better to leave part of the money in the hotel room (in a suitcase or safe).

Yes, Italy is not as criminal and dangerous as we are told about it (Naples is especially famous), but there are pickpockets and thieves in any tourist city, and there are especially many of them in the most popular and crowded places.
