After anxiously awaiting the birth of your new baby, he or she is finally here! Now what?

Taking care of a newborn is a lot different than taking care of an older child. The variety and volume of needs are much greater in the first few weeks. This can make new parents feel anxious, worried they’ll somehow damage their bundle of joy.

Don’t stress! We’ve got you covered!

Luckily for parents everywhere, the experts have years of experience. Here are a few of the best newborn care tips we’ve compiled to help you make sure your baby is loved and well-cared for.

1. Feeding

It is important to know that newborns should be fed every 2-3 hours. They have tiny stomachs and need to be fed often in order to gain weight.

If you choose to breastfeed, you will need to make sure you have a good latch and are producing enough milk. If you choose to formula feed, you will need to find a formula that your baby does well on and make sure you are following the directions on how to mix it correctly.

Whichever method you choose, it is also important to burp your baby after every feeding. This will help prevent them from getting gas pain.

2. Bathing

When undressing your baby, support their head and neck at all times. Be sure to use warm water and keep a close eye on the temperature. Use one hand to support their head and the other to wash them with a mild, unscented baby cleanser.

To rinse, simply cup your hand and pour clean water over their head and body. Gently pat them dry with a soft towel, and apply a hypoallergenic baby moisturizer if desired.

3. Dressing and Diapering

For diaper care and cleaning duties, always make sure that you have everything you need within reach before you start. This includes a clean diaper, wipes, and a safe place to put your baby down.

It is a good idea to create a newborn diaper bag checklist of all the things you need, this will help you stay organized and avoid rushing.

Dress your newborn in clothing that is comfortable and does not have too many layers. Make sure to also dress them in warm clothing if it is cold outside.

4. Sleeping

In order to ensure their safety and comfort, always place your baby on their back to sleep, this decreases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Keep the crib or bassinet clear of pillows, blankets, or toys to avoid suffocation hazards. A firm mattress is also important, as soft bedding can increase the risk of suffocation.

If you are using a blanket, be sure to tuck it around the crib, so it does not come loose and become a hazard. Always keep an eye on your baby while they are sleeping, and if you have any concerns, consult your pediatrician.
