Just when you think you have your budget under control, then wham! You find some unexpected payment and you are not pleasantly surprised at all. These expenses can be anything from as serious as a sudden stay at a hospital, to pressing matters as car troubles, to something that you totally forgot about, like a bill or a due gift.

As with most unexpected things, it will always be an inopportune time. If you have an emergency fund, that might help, but eventually, if you keep digging into it, it will reach a point where it becomes exhausted.

So what can you do when you unexpectedly go over your budget? Here are some tips on measures you can take for unexpected blows on your budget.

Check another budget you have:

So you have an appliance, for example, that broke down the same week you were planning for a quick getaway maybe. You’re going to have to prioritize here and see which is more important to you; the appliance or two days at a resort? If your travel plans aren’t absolutely necessary, then postpone your getaway and use the money to replace your appliance. Other budgets like eating outside should be the first place to check on what can be used.

Sell something:

You might not want to, but you also might want and have been wanting for some time to sell some of your used items. Well, this would be the time as it could put your budget back on track. Have a garage sale or go online and you’ll find people interested. After all, ‘one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.’

Borrow:

Borrowing money is another option. Some people prefer borrowing from friends and family members, but you should know you could get turned down even by the closest people to you. This is because nowadays, people are often wary of lending money. You yourself might not want anyone to know that you’re strapped for cash. On the other hand, a bank loan can take too long to process and there’s no guarantee that your application will be approved. Using direct payday lenders is one of the safest and quickest ways to get the cash you desperately need. Reputable payday loan companies are regulated and as long as you do have a source of income to pay back the loan, this can be your surest bet.

Postpone anything less essential:

Whatever it is, if you can live without it, don’t purchase anything for the time being except your essentials. Don’t go out and live off your credit card as if nothing has happened. This will only get you in a vicious circle of ongoing debt.

Prioritize:

Going over budget isn’t one of the deadly sins, at least it’s not if you don’t make a habit of it. It happens to all of us, but you need to learn from it and how to better prepare yourself, especially if you’re new to handling your own finances. Thankfully, you can find help from payday loaners and other means which can save the day for you.
