  1. Talk to Your Neighbor

If you have a neighbor you want to have a friendly discussion with them about the fence you are planning on building. Because this fence will be seen on their side of the property you might even have to obtain written permission from then before you start building.

  1. Permits

Next, you will have to seek a fence-building permit for your city or county. If you live in a community with an HOA then you will also have to talk to them prior to building because you might have to take out permits with them as well.

Some HOAs only allow certain heights, materials, and colors. It is very important not to skip this step because you do not want anyone to make you take down your fence after you build it.

If everything sounds like a pain up to this point, then this blog will come in handy to help you call in the pros to help you.

  1. Post Holes

If you are still on a mission to do this yourself then you will want to mark an X on the places along the fence line where you will be putting the fence posts. Fence panels are usually 6 to 8 feet long.

Use a post hole digger to dig holes on all the X marks you made. Make the holes half the length of the post and three times the width of the post.

  1. Add the Base Fill

Use all-purpose gravel to fill in the post holes. You will want to add about 6 inches in height. Then, set a fence post in the hole and tap it into place. Have a helper fill the rest of the hole around the fence post with a ready mix concrete while you hold the post in place.

Continue filling until the concrete mixture reaches the ground level and use a level to make sure that the fence post is completely vertical. Continue the same process for each fence post until all the posts are up.

Lastly, add the fence panels in between each post, one at a time.
