An Adventurer’s Guide to Visiting the Republic of Kiribati

World War II Remains

Most people know about this republic because of its famous World War II history. This was occupied by the Japanese, but later the US took over. There are many signs left over to show the harsh history.

One of the easiest things to find is the anti-ship guns on the ocean-facing island. It’s near the causeway to Bairiki. These guns were supplied to the Japanese by the British, and they installed them on this island.

However, there are also old Japanese command bunkers, big structures, and thick concrete walls to protect against attacks.

There is also a memorial to all Americans who died during the battle. This is outside of Betio. There is also a Japanese memorial, but you’ll need to make an appointment to see it.

Tarawa

After you visit the Ikari House, go to the capital of the Republic of Kiribati to Tarawa. 

This is a group of islets that are connected in the shape of a boomerang. You can get to these islands over bridges, but there are some ferries that go back and forth as well.

If you want to experience the culture, you should stay in the southern part of Tarawa. If you want a secluded vacation, stay in the northern parts. 

Abemama

Abemama was the runner-up to be the capital after World War II back when these were still known as the Gilbert Islands. However, Tarawa won because it gave easier access to the reef around it.

This island has plenty of nature to see, and you may even be able to see a tiny yellow barking frog. This frog was introduced to help control a growing mosquito population. 

Restaurants

There are also many different restaurants to try out while you’re here. For example, there is the Royal Bar near the Betio Islet. This has working air conditioning, and you can grab a cold beer and some soft drinks. 

The bar is open in the evenings, and it’s a great place to visit.

You could also try the Ambo Lagoon Club. This is on the lagoon side of the island, and you’ll find plenty of entertainment here. They have volleyball, a dart facility, and a lagoon that’s safe to swim in.
