The Florida Keys, Florida

The Florida Keys is a great place to go for a quick trip from Miami.

The drive from Miami to Key West is only 4 hours in duration from start to finish but we would highly recommend you making some stops along the way!

The first place you will reach from Miami is the often overlooked town of Key Largo.

If you are a keen diver, buckle up as Key Largo is going to be one of the very best places you visit in the Keys! Key Largo is home to the amazing Spiegel Grove wreck, one of the most popular diving spots in Florida.

You also have the chance to swim with dolphins in the wild at Key Largo and visit two beautiful beaches at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

After Key Largo, we would recommend briefly stopping in at Islamorada, Marathon and Bahia Honda before making your way to most people’s favorite spots in the Florida Keys – Key West.

Key West has a really quirky atmosphere and heaps of awesome activities to enjoy like visiting the Ernest Hemmingway house. The descendants of his 6 toed cat, Snowball, still live in the house to this day.

Tip: Key West is the Southern most point in the United States so you might like to get a picture with the sign while you are there!

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is quite a drive from Miami (around a 10 hour drive) so you might like to get a quick, cheap 2 hour flight to reach this destination!

Flights can be as little as $40, making it a perfect and affordable holiday from Miami!

Atlanta is a rather unrated city in the United States but don’t overlook it as it has some great claims to fame – it is the home of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, rap icons Kanye West and Usher and even where famous Gone with the Wind writer, Margaret Mitchell, used to call home.

There are also tonnes of amazing things to do in Atlanta to occupy your time including the Coca-Cola musuem, the Georgia Aquarium and the Beltline – a city project which converted an old railway line into a walking track connecting the coolest neighbourhoods in the city.

Tip: Atanta is often referred to as ‘Hotlanda’ so you may want to save this trip for spring, fall or even winter!

Charleston, South Carolina

Ahhh, Charleston, one of the prettiest cities in the South!

The good news here is you can drive from Miami as it is only a 4.5 hour drive to reach Charleston. Alternatively, there are flights as little as $100 connecting these cities which only take an hour duration!

If you love meandering through quaint, colorful streets with a whole lot of southern charm then Charleston is the city for you.

Not only is Charleston a very beautiful city but it has an interesting and at the same time sad history. 

If you would like to know more about the slave plantations in the South, take a visit to Boone Hall plantation in Charleston where you can see original slave quarters still intact.

Luckily, Boone Hall is not all doom and gloom. For the Notebook fans out there, Boone Hall is also one of the main filming locations of the Notebook!

Greenville, South Carolina

A little further from Charleston and around a 10 hour drive from Miami (you will want to fly this one!) you will find the darling town of Greenville in South Carolina!

If you like cute little Southern towns, Greenville is the perfect choice!

The best part of Greenville is the amazing green space right in the centre of the city known as Falls Park on the Reedy. Here you can admire the beautiful waterfall on ground or from the incredible constructed bridge.

If you have kids you might like to follow up a visit at the park with another one of the best attractions in the area – the Greenville Zoo!
